Project Conduct
While conducting the project, first step is to translate the project goals into interactive multimedia application.
Project: Making of a movie (interactive).
Goal: Making a good interactive multimedia presentation.
Objectives: Development of the project by using all the multimedia software studied in this semester. This is how the learner will come to know about the need of all the softwares to assemble the project. The leaner will also learn the step-by-step process to create a multimedia application and coordination between all different multimedia blocks.
Activities: Multimedia application is the product of combined efforts of a production team. Planning and execution involves the following:
Developing the concept/story.
Developing a logical flow chart
Developing the storyboard for interactive program/animation/movie.
Preparing the script for narrations, text, and video.
Planning the production of content graphics, text, music, audio, video, and animation.
Distributing the work to the team as per the skill set.
Defining a project deadline.
Project Deliverables
There are few deliverables that go along with the project. They are as follows:
Client Requirement Specification (CRS)
• Client Requirements
This section consists of brief description that provides an understanding of the context for the proposed effort. It also states the functions required for the project in quantitative and qualitative terms, and what the system must do to completely fulfill the owner/user's expectations.
• Client Organization Profile
This section consists of the relevant information about the client organization, mission, locations, numbers, and type of personnel. It also includes the information about relationships or interfaces with other organizations and entities, as they relate to the system task.
• User Acceptance
The dient requirements specified are the basis for User Acceptance Testing. It determines that the correct and accurate information is delivered to the end users as intended.
• Testing Strategy
Develop a testing strategy to ensure that the required functionality is working correctly and is delivered to the client
• Project Conduct and Documentation
A sample of CRS
Checklist for Validations
Determining whether the software meets the specifications that was previously established and goes on in an error- free manner is called, verification. It may involve the end users and the developer(s) before the product is placed in service or shipped.
Validation is the determination of whether the system that has been produced solves the original real-world problem and meets the needs of the user. It requires the involvement of end users to confirm that the program does indeed serve the intended purpose.
Project Introduction
You can develop an interactive application that includes 2D Animation movie and audio-video movie.
The objectives to introduce this project are as follows:
• Understanding the concept of combination of media as a part of the production management and planning of a multimedia application.
• Recognizing the development steps of a multimedia application.
• Defining the steps to plan the design of a multimedia production.
• Visualizing the use of various kinds of building blocks and their functions in multimedia application.
• Identifying the sources of several different multimedia building blocks.
• Understanding the relationship between the design of a multimedia application and the selection of the production team members.
• Understanding the roles of the multimedia development team.
• Identifying the roles of the multimedia development team.
• Understanding the role of the Production Manager in the production of multimedia building blocks.
Now, you will explore the step-by-step process to develop the goals and objectives of the multimedia application and the ways to present it.
Planning and Execution of the Media
learnt about multimedia, its application, the development team's composition, and multimedia blocks. Now, you will learn the essentials of planning for the production of an application.
You have to plan all the components of the application before the authoring process begins. After defining the purpose, the next steps are as follows:
• Defining the presentation goal(s).
• Developing the flowchart.
• Planning the User Interface and Navigation.
• Developing the story script for 2D Animation.
• Developing the storyboard for the 2D Animation.
• Developing steps like Audio, Animation, Video, and After Effects.
• Authoring Multimedia.
Production
In this section, you will explore the making of an animation movie and the step-by-step development of each of the multimedia building blocks such as Audio, Animation, Video, After Effects, and Editing. Finally, for the assembling of an entire multimedia application you will explore Multimedia Authoring.
The steps involved in the production are as follows:
Concept and Theme Development
This is the first step in 2D Animation Portfolio. The client requires one minute 2D Animation. According to the requirement, brainstorming is done and a theme is decided. The theme is, 'Kid's Imagination'.
Visualization
As soon as the concept is decided, the visualization process starts. A rough story is framed according to the concept. The story starts with a kid reading Jungle Book in his house. As he is reading the book, he starts imagining and feels as if he is in the jungle. In the jungle, the Sun welcomes him and asks him to follow. As the kid follows the Sun, he meets different members of the jungle. The members of the jungle are busy reading for their exams. Suddenly, the kid realizes that he too has to study. So, he says good-bye to his friends and comes out of his imagination.
Storyboarding
After visualizing the rough story, it is now time to write and document the story, frame by frame. Therefore, Toon Boom Storyboard is used to design the storyboard. Frame-by-frame instructions, related voice-over, and background sound are documented. For every frame, graphics and illustrations are designed. The whole 2D Animation is finally documented frame by frame.
Sketching and Layout
Sketching and layout process is the next step after storyboarding. The rough sketches of the kid and the background are sketched on the paper. Moreover, there are two scenes in the story, one is kid's house and the other is jungle scene.
Keyframe and In-betweens
The character in the story is to be animated. So, according to the final sketch of the character, the in-betweens are sketched to animate the character. For the animation of the kid walking, fourteen different sketches are drawn.
Scanning
After sketching and in-betweens process, it is now time to scan the sketch images. Refer to figure 3.6. The settings for scanning are as follows:
Resolution: 150 dpi
Mode: RGB
The file is saved in the jpeg format. The in-betweens of the kid character are saved as Kid 01, Kid 02, Kid 03 till Kid 14. The files are saved in this manner to help the process of animation.
Tracing and Character Development
The scanned images are traced in Toon Boom Studio. The kid's character in developed. Refer to figure 3.7. The different positions of the kid are traced including the kid's sitting posture from the front as well as from the back. The scanned images of Kid 01 to Kid 14 are the in-betweens of the kid's walking process and are traced keeping in mind the size and the movement, Minor corrections are made for smooth animation.
Background Development
The background is decided according to the scene. There are two scenes in the story. kid's house and the jungle scene. The first scene is designed and developed keeping in mind that it is a kid's room. Jungle scene is also developed with different types of trees, mountains, sky, and greenery all around.
Ink and Paint
Finally, you add color to all the illustrations. Firstly, the kid's character is colored in bright shades as he is the main character in the whole story. This is done with the help of color pallet in Toon Boom Studio. The in-betweens are colored accordingly. The kid's house, jungle, and animals in the jungle are also colored.
Animation
Now, animate the scenes in Toon Boom Studio. As per the story, the kid is reading Jungle Book in his house. So in the first scene, the whole house is seen along with the kid sitting and reading. The camera is panned and zoomed into the area where the kid is sitting. Later, the back posture of the kid sitting is shown along with the Jungle Book. The cameras are again panned and zoomed in the image area of the Jungle Book and the jungle scene starts. Later, as the story goes on, the camera is again panned and zoomed. Lastly, the story ends with the last page of the Jungle Book saying "THE END".
Sound Recording
After the animation process, background sound as per the scenes is decided and recorded. A female voice is recorded to narrate and start the story. A kid's voice is recorded for the kid's character in the story and a strong voice is recorded for the character of the Sun.
Sound Integration
After sound recording, sound editing process is implemented with the help of Sound forge. The sound files are saved in the .wav format. Then, the sound is integrated with respect to the animation. As per the scene, the background sound is also edited and integrated.
Composition and Titling
This process is followed after the sound integration. All the necessary steps are implemented for smooth animation. The titling of the story is done in Premiere.
Final Output
After the titling and final composition of various movies and background sound, the final file is exported to the .avi format in Preimere. The final .avi file is to be integrated later in Flash Interface after converting the .avi format to the .flv format.
